Many great instrument brands start with a simple frustration. Suttaya was born in 2017, from a drummer’s wish to break the limits of where music can happen.
Our founder, Elias Hale, was a gigging percussionist and woodworking hobbyist. He spent years traveling between small venues, street performances and home practice. He loved the warm, natural tone of acoustic drums, but traditional drum sets were always a problem: heavy, bulky, slow to set up, and impossible to keep in a small apartment. Electronic kits felt artificial and failed to build real playing technique. There was no all-in-one portable acoustic drum kit that balanced authentic tone, solid build and easy transport.
That gap became his mission. Working in a small workshop, Elias began testing folding frame designs, focusing on MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) as the core shell material. He chose MDF for its uniform, consistent density, free of knots and uneven grain found in natural solid wood. This engineered wood delivers stable, predictable damping, suppresses unwanted extra resonance, and produces a clean, balanced tone perfect for portable acoustic percussion. It also machines cleanly, locks hardware securely, and holds its shape well through repeated setup, transport and temperature changes.
Early prototypes were tested by fellow drummers, buskers and beginners. Every feedback shaped the design, refining the folding structure, stability and tone. We added a protective finished coating to shield the MDF surface from scuffs and minor moisture exposure during outdoor gigs and travel.
This is where our core belief took root: Everything we do starts with why. We do not just build drum kits. We create gear that removes barriers between drummers and their rhythm. Music should not be locked inside a dedicated music room or studio. It should travel with you.
As the team grew, Suttaya kept its musician-first mindset. We are not a large corporate brand separated from the players. We are a team of real people who love making great products. Every member of our design and testing team understands what drummers actually need: reliable hardware, balanced tone, easy maintenance, and no hidden extra costs.
Our guiding promise stays simple: We make things that work better and last longer. We carefully select high-grade MDF for our drum shells and suitcase frame. Its homogeneous structure reduces warping and twisting over time. Unlike cheap kits with flimsy plastic or low-density board, our MDF construction stays rigid while you play. Best of all, we use standard-size drum components. When drum pads or cymbals wear out, you can easily source replacement parts. Craftsmanship is never an afterthought.
Today, our signature portable folding drum kit is the result of years of iteration. Built with premium MDF, it arrives fully equipped, ready to play out of the box. It works for home practice, studio recording, casual jams and outdoor busking. It serves new drummers learning the basics, and experienced players looking for a trusted secondary travel kit.
We still carry the same mindset Elias had back in 2017: intentional design, made with care. We do not try to replace traditional drum sets. We offer another choice for drummers who value freedom.
For us, the story is not finished. We keep listening to our community of drummers, refining our MDF frame design and exploring new ways to bring authentic acoustic percussion to more places.
Wherever your beats take you, Suttaya is here to keep the rhythm moving.
